Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse so she could continue her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an instrument for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and taught how to express herself through the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. Her father recalled watching the historic Civil Rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a student at Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for the broadcast industry while she was still at college. Her internship was with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the home that belonged to a member of the jury. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism due to the work that she was assigned, the journalist determined to make a move in the field of publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college to be an intern at the studio that was small. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
